Tucked away at Hakata Gensuke Qv in Melbourne’s CBD, this ramen spot has built a strong reputation among locals who take their Japanese comfort food seriously. Located at 200 Lonsdale St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia, the restaurant regularly draws long queues, and after one visit, it’s easy to understand why. The atmosphere feels cozy and lively at the same time, creating the kind of dining experience that makes people happy to wait a little longer for a seat.
The menu focuses heavily on rich chicken-based ramen, and the standout bowl is easily the Chicken Ramen selection. The God Fire Tori Ramen delivers a bold hit of spice without overpowering the deep broth, making it a solid choice for anyone who enjoys intense flavors. Meanwhile, the Black Tori Ramen offers something darker and more aromatic thanks to its roasted garlic notes. Both bowls feel balanced, hearty, and surprisingly comforting, especially on cooler Melbourne evenings.
For diners who enjoy stronger seasoning, the Black Ramen brings another layer of richness that lingers nicely after each bite. The Spicy Ramen also deserves attention because the heat builds gradually instead of overwhelming the palate immediately. Every ramen bowl feels carefully prepared, from the texture of the noodles to the smooth consistency of the broth. It’s the kind of restaurant where even regular customers continue exploring different combinations from the menu.
Beyond ramen, the Mentaiko Cheese Gyoza is one of the side dishes that people around the table kept talking about. The creamy cheese mixed with mentaiko creates a savory finish that pairs perfectly with the hot soup. It adds a little indulgence without feeling too heavy.
Another reason this Melbourne location stays busy is the thoughtful service setup. The restaurant includes a wheelchair accessible entrance, making it easier for more diners to enjoy the experience comfortably. There are also healthy options available for guests looking for lighter choices without sacrificing flavor. During selected hours, the happy hour food specials attract students, office workers, and late lunch crowds looking for good value.
What stands out most about Hakata Gensuke Qv is how consistent the experience feels. From the warm atmosphere to the carefully prepared ramen bowls, the restaurant delivers the kind of meal people genuinely remember. Reviews often mention the usual wait, but honestly, the steady line outside almost feels like part of the experience now. In a city packed with Japanese dining locations, this spot continues to stand out because it keeps things simple, focused, and deeply satisfying.

“ My absolute favorites here are the Chicken God Fire ramen and the beef gyoza, no hesitation. Hakata Gensuke (this branch in particular) is our go-to and the one we love most. The location is central, the team is consistently polite, and they move incredibly fast. Even when the line looks long, it usually clears quicker than you expect. It’s a well-run kitchen. The ramen is seriously impressive. The broth is rich and full-bodied, the spice level in the God Fire hits just right, and the eggs are always cooked to the exact same jammy perfection, that consistency is what keeps me coming back. At one point, I was going at least once a week. Sitting at the bar is the best spot in the house; you get to watch the chefs in action while your bowl comes together. My best friend swears by the edamame, so when we go together, our order is basically automatic: two God Fire ramens, one beef gyoza, edamame, and two Asahi. Always. The kitchen is clean, the ingredients taste fresh, and the space is small but full of character. It’s easily one of the places I’ll always miss and one I recommend from the heart. ”
“ My husband and I have been coming here for almost ten years and have had a positive experience every time. It is our favourite spot for ramen and is always worth coming into the city for. The broth is always so flavourful and satisfying. I have never had any issues with the service and the staff have always been lovely. It is also a very nice experience to watch them prepare the ramen as you wait. This is the first time I've left a review for them but with the amount of times I have come back to eat here, they definitely deserve the positive feedback. ”
“ Ordered the Signature Tori Plus and Yuzu Fizz. Both came out on time. Ramen was delicious and serving was good. Looks like there’s no pork on the menu and they also don’t use pork in the broth. ”
“ First time there. First time trying Japanese food. First time eating with Chopsticks . The Ramen was very tasty and everything about it was great. Especially the egg was perfectly boiled for my taste (not too hard & dry), soft and juicy yolk. The quality of chicken was also great, it was soft and tender. Definitely recommend to try at least once ”
“ I always come here when I’m not feeling good and it never fails to give me comfort. It’s hearty, light and rich in flavour. Their chicken karage is also good however we tried the prawn spring rolls is a bit of a downfall. But overall still a good meal and will definitely coming back. Staff are very good and attentive. ”
“ Just had an incredible meal at Hakata Gensuke Japanese Ramen today! The broth was rich and flavorful, noodles perfectly cooked, and every bite felt like comfort in a bowl. Service was warm and welcoming—truly an authentic ramen experience I’ll be craving again soon ”
“ Hakata Gensuke is a go-to for serious ramen lovers The chicken-based broth is rich, smooth and deeply satisfying without being heavy. Top picks: Chicken ramen, gyoza, ajitama egg. Fast service, consistent quality and authentic flavours make this a reliable favourite in the CBD. ”
“ I went here for lunch with a couple of friends today. It was really good. Staff are polite and professional, the dining area is kept very clean, and the food is really good. Would definitely come here again next time I'm in the city. ”
